Think your way to a better life

bythemethod | August 1, 2008

The way you think will determine the way you act. There can be little doubt in anyones mind that there is a direct link between attitude and success. If you want to be successful you must have the right attitude. If you are not successful yet but want to be more successful then time spent on getting yourself to think in the right ways is time well spent.

Create a positive picture of success in your mind

The first step is to create as clear a picture as possible in your mind what success looks like to you. This will be different for everyone so try to create an image that means something to you.

This could be overall success in life or simply just success in one particular goal. For instance if you want to lose weight then picture yourself looking thin. Think about the life you will have when you are thin. Will you be more sporty and active? What kinds of clothes will you wear? What will those clothes feel like? etc.

If you struggle with creating pictures but you want an overall picture for you success then here is one idea of how you can create your image: think of a place – it could be a building or somewhere else but it must be a place you would like to be in if you were successful; now go to that place and look around – what kinds of things are in that place, how is it decorated, what colours can you see; now think about the people who are there with you – do you have children in your picture, are you on your own; try to think about the kind of day you would have in your perfect picture; use your imagination to fill in as much details as you can.

If you have trouble thinking about it from your own perspective why not imagine describing it to someone else.

The image you build must be a positive image.

The image should be as tangible as possible – that is you should know what it looks like, sounds like, smells like, feels like. The more detail you can create in your mind the better.

You need to relax

Once you have the image in your mind you need to relax. Once you are relaxed you can start to make the picture as real as possible in your imagination. In your imagination try walking around and looking at the different things in your picture. Get a strong feeling for what it is like. The more emotion you can invest in the image the more likely it will be to come true.

Practise on a regular basis

This isn’t something you can do once and then relax and expect everything to happen. You need to practice this regularly – every day. The more you practice the more likely your image will come true.

This is not magic

I’m afraid there is nothing mystical or magical about this process. You are simply creating an image for your brain to use to help you achieve things. This will not get you the impossible but it will enable you to help yourself. Your brain will start to look for ways to achieve that image that you are feeding it. You will feel more energised to try and achieve your goal and you will be more motivated.

Tell us about your dreams

Make them a little more real now by describing your dreams to us in a comment. You don’t have to be too descriptive just tell us one thing. By writing them down you will also help yourself realise them.
