Detach yourself from a stressful event

Sometimes I have found myself in a situation I didn’t want to be in. It’s easy for me during those times to feel very negative about things and this negativity always makes any situation worse. There is a simple technique that works for many people that allows you to get away from the negative feelings pretty easily but it does take a little practice.

You need to detach yourself from the situation

Perhaps you find yourself behaving or thinking or feeling in a way that you do not like. Perhaps you find yourself in the grip of a strong negative emotion.

Try to picture such a time in your mind and feel what it is like - those unpleasant feelings that you are trying to avoid.

Step away from yourself

Now you need to imagine that you can step away from yourself in that situation. Imagine you can step outside of your body and observe what is going on.

As you step away from your body you also step away from all the negativity and all those things that are making you feel bad about yourself.

As you step away you are becomming calm and rational. You can see what you were like but now you are going to be different.

Keep practising to choose a better you

Now whenever you find yourself in one of those moods that you despise. Whenever you are behaving or thinking in a way you dislike just step away from yourself. Distance yourself from the old you and choose to be a new you.
