Music
bythemethod | December 11, 2006One of the best ways I know of getting people to unwind if they are struggling with meditation is music. Not the playing of it – although this has its own benefits – but listening to it. I am always trying to be realistic about what can be expected from people who struggle with stress and sometimes getting people to meditate is just too big step. If you are one of these people then start with music.
Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Find some nice peaceful music.
I ought to say something here about the kind of music you should try to pick. The music should be slow and peaceful. I prefer either classical or film music for this but you make your own choices. I suggest you find something without any words. You just need the relaxing music without the distraction of trying to listen to some words at the same time. Don’t pick a piece of music because someone else has told you its good, try to find something that will suit you.
Now if its in the evening turn down the lights if you can. Put on the music. Sit (or lie) down in a comfortable position and don’t get up until the music is finished or until about 15 minutes have gone by (you can decide what you want to do – if you can only manage 5 minutes then do 5).
Listen actively to the music. That is try to hear the changes in melody or tempo etc. If you can do your best to get lost in the music. If other thoughts pop into your mind acknowledge them and then let them go. Don’t worry about them just let them float on and say if its something important I will think about you in a little while.
You will be amazed about how such a simple thing can make such a big difference.
