Many of us talk about being happy and yet few of us ever stop to think about what happiness for us is. We just assume we will know it when we see it and most of the time we believe that what makes everyone else happy must be what will make us happy – this is not true.
What is happiness for you?
This can be a difficult thing to think about especially if you have been putting happiness off for a long time. Remember that this is happiness for you and not for anyone else. You are not trying to please anyone else but yourself here. What makes YOU happy? This is not what your mum thinks makes you happy or what your friends think but what you think.
My mum was wonderful to her children as we grew up but she could never remember who liked what. There have been several times in my life that my mum has told me she has cooked my favourite only to discover it was my brothers favourite she had cooked. The only person who really knows what makes you happy is you.
Think about what made you happy in the past
By thinking about your past you may remember something about what makes you happy. Think about things you did when you were young. This isn’t about a mid life crisis here its about what makes you happy. If you are like me you might well have left some things behind that used to make you really happy – for me it was wilderness walking.
Now when you have worked it out pick on one thing that makes you happy and build it into your week. Put it in your diary or on your calendar and make sure you do it. When you have done it think about how happy it made you. It doesn’t have to give you raptours of delight it just need to leave you feeling happier than when you started.
Now think of something else that makes you happy.
I hope you find some more happiness in your life.
