Researchers have found that people who maintain balance in life tend to perform better than those who don’t.  If you don’t have a good sense of balance you will keep falling over. Simple.

What is balance?

Most people benefit from having balance in their lives. Now balance comes in many different forms and its up to each one of us to decide what balance is for them. However all work and no play is not good balance.

Draw yourself a balance chart

So draw yourself a little chart this week by drawing a horizontal line along the bottom of a bit of paper and a vertical line up the side (like you were drawing a bar chart – in fact that is what you are doing). Now draw a bar for each of the following: health, relationships, spiritual, money, time for self, career, community. Make each one as high as you feel you are doing in life. For instance if you felt very healthy your health bar would stretch from the bottom to the top of the page. When you have finished take a look. Balance is for all of them to be the same height. If you are out of balance you might notice one or two bars that are much bigger than the others.

It is of course up to you where you want them to be but knowing something is out of balance is good useful information.

Look out for the things that are very out of balance

If you notice that you have some things that are very out of balance then you need to make these a priority for a while – at least until they come back more in to balance.

Don’t try to tackle too much in one go but pick on one area and concentrate on that. Then decide on one thing you can do to make that area better. Then do it for one week. At the end of the week assess how successful this has been.

Then if unsuccessful try something else if successful either choose to continue with that for another week or decide on something else you can do.
