Work is not all bad

Work spares us from three evils: boredom, vice, and need

If you listen to some people speak it sounds as though work is an evil thing. They would have you believe that work is the part of life that gets in the way of having fun.

Now I’m not a workaholic and I do believe that not all of life should be filled with work but work is not evil.

I know the bible implies that work is a punishment but if you read what it actually says it doesn’t say that at all. It just says that work will be hard for us. Well sometimes that hard toil is painful and difficult and I don’t deny that but this does not mean that it can’t be enjoyable.

Many people find great pleasure and fun in their work. This is a good thing as long as they don’t let work take over everything. If we let work take over everything then we are not any better than people who don’t work because it gets in the way of the rest of their life. To me both extremes are wrong.

Work is not evil and it can be a pleasure. But of course work also brings it’s benefits: it stops us getting bored (don’t underestimate the importance of this), it stops us from doing wrong things (sometimes) and it provides money to help us live.

Hooray for work! That’s what I say.
