To manage stress you need to be aware of when it hurts. Just like when you visit a doctor and they find somewhere sensitive to press and they ask you if it hurts. We can’t press anywhere for stress but we can take a note of when it is bothering us.

Many of us talk about being happy and yet few of us ever stop to think about what happiness for us is. We just assume we will know it when we see it and most of the time we believe that what makes everyone else happy must be what will make us happy – this is not true.

Stress is a killer. Every year thousands across the globe die as a result of being under too much stress. But you don’t have to literally die to suffer. Many millions will have no life s a result of stress and even more friends and families will suffer because of stress.

I’m keen to help people make the best of their lives and so I’m posting this series were we will be exploring some simple steps you can take to manage your stress more effectively.

This week my point is to always remember:

Your life matters

You are a wonderful and unique individual who matters as much as anyone else.

Find some time this week to give yourself a treat.

Find a way of saying to yourself that you are valued and important. This could be anything from buying a favourite magazine to perhaps having a night in your favourite hotel or spa. Just something to say you are special.

Of course in everything we do we should consider the impact of the choices we make on other people but this does not mean we should not consider our own interests or our own happiness.

You should not be putting your happiness off until a later date.

Many people delay personal happiness in the mistaken belief that they can live unhappy for now so that they can have paradise later. For a few this might work but for most it just gives makes you miserable now and later. Stress destroys health – if you live with stress too long in the belief that you can weather the storm now until you retire early you may well be shortening your life and setting yourself up for bad health in your retirement.

So learn to enjoy life now.
